CTSA Committee
A primary mission of the CTSA Translational Steering Committee is to develop infrastructure to facilitate advancements of novel translational research and technologies through the CTSA Consortium in collaboration with NIH. The committee aims to foster advances in translational research through bidirectional integration of basic and clinical research to improve health and patient care.
The interim committee chair, Dr. James Krueger, provided an update from the Steering Committee to the CTSA Consortium Operations Committee on August 21, 2007. His report was enthusiastically received by the PIs, particularly with respect to the upcoming workshop on T1 Translation: Developing Innovative Technologies for Health (winter 2008).
Additional priorities for the CTSA Translational Steering Committee include:
- Creating an inventory of translational cores and other translational resources available at CTSA sites and elsewhere
- Defining the scope, best practices, and procedures of T1 Translational Science
- Identifying, prioritizing, and addressing issues and barriers to T1 research
- Creating a process for easy information dissemination among CTSA and other T1 researchers (based on the CTSA Translational Steering Committee wiki)
NIH Expands National CTSA Consortium
On September 18th, NIH announced the expansion of the national consortium that is transforming how clinical and translational research is conducted at academic health centers across the country. Funded through Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSAs), the consortium adds 12 more academic health centers to the 12 announced last October.
This round of awards includes: partnerships with three minority research centers; three institutions led by women principal investigators; and connections with an additional four national primate research centers, which will help bring discoveries in animal models more quickly into clinical practice.
The following institutions are receiving awards in the second round of CTSA funding (view descriptions of the 2007 CTSA awardees at http://ctsaweb.org/partinst.cfm):
Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio)
Emory University (Atlanta, Ga.), partnering with Morehouse School of Medicine
Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Md.)
University of Chicago (Chicago, Ill.)
University of Iowa (Iowa City, Iowa)
University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Mich.)
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas, Texas)
University of Washington (Seattle, Wash.)
University of Wisconsin–Madison (Madison, Wis.)
Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tenn.), partnering with Meharry Medical College
Washington University (St. Louis, Mo.)
Weill Cornell Medical College (New York, N.Y.), partnering with Hunter College
To welcome the 2007 grantees, NCRR hosted a series of Web meetings this week to share experiences and exchange ideas. Next, all CTSA grantees will come together for a face-to-face meeting on October 3, 2007, in Bethesda, Md.
