Major Areas of Investigation

Allergy and Immunology: AIDS Clinical Trials Group: vertical transmission of AIDS; heart and lung complications; audiologic function; oral manifestations; severe combined immunodeficiency disorders; asthma.

Critical Care: Long-term outcomes of pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) patients; work of breathing and mechanically ventilated patients: gastric intramucosal pH and predictor of cardiac output in children on mechanical ventilation; protein intake and nitrogen balance in PICU patients on total parenteral nutrition.

Endocrinology: Metabolic role of hormones in pubertal growth; effects of hormones on calcium metabolism; studies in clinical disorders of hypopituitarism, Turner's syndrome, diabetes mellitus.

Gene Therapy: Hepatic gene transplantation; gene therapy for pediatric AIDS; urea cycle disorders gene therapy; thymidine kinase gene therapy in children with brain tumors.

Genetic Diseases: Urea cycle disorders; contiguous gene deletion syndromes (Smith-Magenis, Prader-Willi, DiGeorge, Angelmann, Potocki-Shaffer, and Williams syndromes, and Fabry disease).

Infectious Diseases: Maternal-infant cytomegalovirus; Norwalk virus vaccine.

Neonatal Nutrition: Gluconeogenesis in very-low-birthweight infants; Ca and P metabolism and skeletal mineralization; early feeding strategies and development in low-birthweight infants; sulfur amino acid metabolism in low-birthweight infants; quality of energy intake in low-birthweight infants; essential fatty acid metabolism in very-low-birthweight and term infants.

Neurology: Hereditary ataxias; Rett syndrome.

Oncology: Pharmacokinetics of chemotherapy in CNS tumors.

Surgery: Islet cell transplantation.
