Instrumentation and Specialized Technologies for Biomedical Research

NCRR’s Division of Biomedical Technology seeks to increase small business participation in federally supported research and development as well as the private-sector commercialization of technology developed with federal support. It does this through the federal government's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.

Funding Areas

NCRR supports research to discover, create, and develop innovative technologies and provides access to these technologies to the biomedical research community. The center is especially interested in funding research in topics areas such as:

  • New or improved instruments, devices, and related methods to facilitate biomedical or behavioral research. Instrumentation includes but is not limited to mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, imaging, fluorescent or kinetic or laser spectroscopes, X-ray absorption/diffraction, electron or confocal microscopes, and flow cytometry
  • Computer science and technology designed to study biomedical or behavioral research problems, such as computer modeling and simulation, and structure-based drug design
  • Development of computational infrastructures that enable coherent biomedical knowledge, such as re-use and re-purposing of data sets and models and integration of heterogeneous data sources
  • Use of Web 2.0 technologies for creating collaborative networking tools, personalized user interfaces, and enabling the translation of basic science
  • Development of visualization tools that assist in exploring multidimensional scientific and health-related data and information and understanding complex concepts, such personal health atlases maps of databases, pathways for translating Discovery into Innovation
  • Novel technologies for proteomics and glycomics discovery, such as sample handing, separations, mass spectrometry, and computational tools for protein identification, data curation and data mining
