NCRR Acting Director's Biography

Dr. Louise E. Ramm is the acting director of the National Center for Research Resources at the National Institutes of Health
Louise E. Ramm, Ph.D.

Dr. Louise E. Ramm is the acting director of the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR). As part of the National Institutes of Health, NCRR funds the development of new technologies for basic and clinical research, supports training for researchers in the biomedical sciences, develops preclinical models, and provides health and biomedical education for the public. NCRR staff administer funding for programs such as clinical and translational science, comparative medicine, biomedical technology research, shared instrumentation, institutional development awards and research centers in minority institutions. During the past five years, NCRR has successfully provided opportunities for collaborations, connections and interactions among investigators within and across these programs.

Dr. Ramm received her Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Virginia. After post-doctoral training in biochemistry, also at the University of Virginia, she became a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the Microbiology Department. Her research in immunochemistry, particularly the interactions and structure of the complement proteins with cell membranes, resulted in many peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Ramm joined the NIH Division of Research Resources, the predecessor organization of NCRR, in 1987, as a Health Scientist Administrator in the Biological Models and Materials Program and subsequently became the director of the Program. She has served in her current NCRR position since 1994.
